Hunger that isn't hunger — 10 minute meditation
When you reach for food and the body is not hungry: honouring where that came from and meeting a different kind of warmth.
About this meditation
Emotional eating: reaching for food when the body is not hungry, the comfort it once meant, the guilt cycle that keeps it stuck, and meeting the feeling underneath with kindness instead of restriction.

You have ten minutes, and nothing is required of you here. We are looking at the reach for food that starts with a feeling, and how to choose without punishing yourself.
Let the sounds in the room arrive and leave.
Do not name them. Let them pass through.
Find the farthest sound you can hear without turning.
Stay there while another sound comes and goes.
Now find the closest sound available to you.
Let that sound be plain, without figuring it out.
Hear the sound your own breath is already making.
Come back to the farthest sound in the room.
Then the closest one. Let both come and go.
You do not need to catch every word. Keep listening.
Thoughts will keep showing up, because that is what minds do. Getting pulled away is not failure. Each time you catch it and come back, that is the part we are practicing.
Come back to the sound of your breath, and the room around it.
Food may carry a table, a person, or a place where you were received. That history is not evidence against you. It is part of what food learned to mean.
Bring up one food tied to being welcomed, cared for, or gathered with other people. Do not explain the memory. Just let it show up.
Find the first place your body changes as it appears. Stay with the exact shape of that change for one full breath.
Now bring up an ordinary food. Wait for the body's first reply, whether that is an opening, settling, pull, tightening, or no change at all.
Locate that reply. It may be in your mouth, throat, chest, belly, or somewhere else. Let it be exactly where it is.
Bring up one exact food you can picture clearly. Wait again for the first reply, and see whether this pull has a different place to land.
Pick one recent reach for food from this week. Replay only its first minute. Was the first cue a body sensation, an image, a thought, or a sudden change in mood?
See whether that pull came in steps or all at once. See whether it made room for several foods, or insisted on one exact thing.
Rules that tighten around food can feed craving, then guilt, then the next reach. We are not adding another rule here. Food is not forbidden, and a reach is not failure.
Feel the weight of your hands where they are resting. Let the strongest point of that remembered pull be here with you for a moment.
Stay with the pull through three breaths before doing anything else. On each one, find its edge and its strongest point.
Check whether it stays put, moves, sharpens, spreads, or thins out. See if another sensation shows up underneath it.
Put two moves in front of you. Eat something now, with no case to make for it. Or take one small action first, and see which lets your jaw, chest, and belly soften.
Come back to your breath. Feel the rest of your body now, then your fingers and toes.
Hear the room again. Let your eyes open, and see what you found out about your own mind in these few minutes.
Next time, put both feet on the floor, find where the reach begins, and stay through three breaths. Choose food or one small action, without making a case against yourself. Let your mind be as it is.
