You have twenty minutes, and here you do not need to do anything. Let’s practice ending the day without turning every task into something to do right now.
Notice the sounds already in the room.
Let them come and go without naming them.
Find the farthest sound you can hear.
Stay with that distant sound for a moment.
Now listen to the sound that is closest.
There may be a rustle or a small sound.
Listen, too, to the sound of your own breathing.
You do not need to catch every word you hear.
Return to the space where sounds appear.
Keep listening while your body remains supported.
Thoughts will keep arriving. That is what the mind does. Getting lost for a moment is not a mistake. When you notice you have gone and return, that is the practice.
Now bring your attention to three places where your body touches the chair, the bed, or the floor.
At each place, notice whether the pressure is even, or whether there is an edge where it changes.
Without changing your position, follow one exhale until it ends.
Notice which point of contact changes first, even slightly, and which takes longer to change.
You do not need to improve those points of contact. For now, noticing what is already happening is enough.
Wait for the next phrase or image that appears in the mind.
Before following it, notice what happens first in the body, a tightening, a small movement, a change in breathing, or perhaps nothing.
Bring up one specific matter from this week, without going through all of it.
Keep it just lightly present, and find the first place in the body that changes.
Watch that place for three exhales, without doing anything with the matter.
A matter can be here without becoming a signal to move right away.
Return to that matter and separate the concrete facts from the phrases about what might happen.
With each phrase, notice where it lands in the body, in the throat, chest, belly, forehead, or somewhere else.
If a phrase about the matter returns, first feel the weight of both feet or hands. Wait for one exhale before touching a screen, paper, or anything related. The body arrives before the gesture.
Return to the breath that is already coming, without changing it.
Notice your whole body, and slowly move your fingers and toes.
Listen again to the sounds in the room, near and far.
Whenever you wish, let your eyes open or look around.
Before getting up, notice what you saw about the way your mind returns to matters.
If a task appears this evening, write it on paper without seeking an answer. Then drink water or turn off a light, and feel your feet for three steps. Go on with your mind as it is.
