Full transcript
For fifteen minutes, you do not need to do anything. We are going to explore letting the mattress take your weight, without holding yourself up more than needed.
Let sounds come and go on their own.
Listen to the room without naming what appears.
Find the farthest sound you can hear right now.
Now notice the closest sound that is already here.
You may also hear the air moving in and out on its own.
You do not need to follow every word. Stay with the listening that is already happening.
Find three places where the mattress receives your body, perhaps your heels, your back, and your head.
At each place, find the exact edge where your skin ends and the pressure against the surface begins.
Choose just one point, like a hip or a shoulder, and notice its weight.
As the air goes out, see whether the pressure changes before, during, or after. Do not decide, just check.
Thoughts will keep arriving, because that is what minds do. You do not need to stop them or turn them into a problem.
When you notice you have drifted away, returning to the point of contact is the repetition. That is what you practice here, many times.
Wait for a small urge to shift position, scratch, or check on a part of your body.
When it appears, find where that urge begins, in the pressure, a muscle, the throat, or the face. Watch it for two breaths before deciding.
The impulse can be here without you having to respond to it right away.
Slowly scan your jaw, neck, shoulders, belly, and hands, until you find an area that seems to be doing something extra.
For one exhale, do not add anything there. See whether the pressure, temperature, or outline of that area changes.
Now compare two distant places, for example the back of your neck and your heels, without moving either one.
Find out which one is being received more clearly by the mattress. Then find a third place you had not included yet.
You can feel an active area without struggling with it or asking it to be different.
Bring to mind a simple image of the first thing your day usually asks of you, getting up, preparing something, looking at a screen, or starting a task.
While that image is here, find which part of your body leans ahead toward it. See if it can keep touching the mattress for two breaths.
Come back to feeling the air moving in and out, without changing it.
Feel your whole body. Gently move your fingers and your toes.
Let the sounds of the room return. Whenever you are ready, allow your eyes to open.
Before you continue, notice what you saw about the way your mind moves ahead or comes back.
At the next start of your day, before your first movement, find one point where the mattress receives your weight, and wait for one full exhale.
When the time you chose to get up arrives, make the next needed gesture. Let your mind be as it is while you return to your day.
