About this meditation

Catastrophising: a mind that rehearses disasters which rarely arrive, the exhaustion of constant bracing, and the shift from imagined danger to present-moment clarity and trust.

You have ten minutes where nothing is required of you. We are going to sort what needs attention now from what your mind is only predicting.

Let the chair hold your weight, and let your feet meet the floor.

Breathe in, two, three, four.

And out, two, three, four, five, six.

Again, breathe in, two, three, four.

And out, two, three, four, five, six.

Keep that easy count on your own for a little while.

There is nothing to get right here. Just keep the count gentle.

Notice whether the body has already slowed down a little.

Find the exact edges of your weight against the chair and floor.

Find one place doing extra work for sitting, in your jaw, shoulders, hands, or belly. Across your next three out-breaths, measure whether it changes even one percent.

Thoughts will keep showing up, because that is what minds do. The job here is not to stop them.

When you notice you drifted and come back, that is the repetition that trains. It happens many times in a good sitting.

Come back to one solid point where your body meets the chair.

Choose one future scene your mind has been running lately. Let it show up as one plain sentence.

In that scene, find what you are trying to prevent. Then find the first place in your body that changes, while keeping that chair contact in view.

That part of the mind is trying to keep you ready. It has rehearsed scenes that never arrived, while your jaw and shoulders carried the bill.

Keep the scene lightly in the background, and keep feeling the chair beneath you.

Look around for three facts you can see or hear in this room.

Now look carefully for anything in this exact minute that requires your action. If there is something, name it precisely. If there is not, let the answer be none.

Come back to the chair, then bring up the real situation from your week behind that scene.

Find the seam between one fact you could verify now and the part that appears only when you run ahead.

Then ask what next concrete step is available before tomorrow, if there is one.

A forecast usually leaves out what becomes available when a hard day actually arrives, including people, information, tools, and choices.

Recall one earlier hard day that was similar in kind. Stay with one exact detail from it.

What was not available in the earlier projection, but was there when the day arrived, a choice, a person, a tool, or a piece of information?

Come back to the natural breath, without changing anything about it.

Feel the chair again, then move your fingers and toes a little.

Let the sounds of the room come back into the picture.

When you are ready, let your eyes open or lift your gaze.

Notice what you saw about the difference between a scene in your head and what was actually here.

When that familiar scene starts again, feel one point of contact, name one fact in this minute, then take the next step or return to what you were doing.

You can let your mind be as it is while you go back to your day.
